Poster:…a little further
December 6, 2012 | By Andy Rutledge
“I tell you, Zoë, we get a mechanic, get her up and running again, hire a good pilot, maybe a cook — live like real people. A small crew; them as feel the need to be free…take jobs as they come. Never have to be under the heel of nobody ever again. “No matter how long the arm of the Alliance might get… we’ll just get ourselves a little further.” - Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Firefly
Like many folks, I’m a Firefly superfan. Unlike many designers, I have never once made a poster. But I was moved. This particular quote is very special to me, so I tried my hand at it. This was the result:
The quote comes from my favorite episode, “Out of Gas”. It’s a scene where Captain Mal Reynolds makes a particularly bittersweet declaration of independence at the outset of his new life after purchasing his ship, Serenity. It’s one of my favorite lines from any character in the series, at once sad and inspiring.
It’s also sadly relevant for Americans today as we witness our government’s strong and greedy arm growing longer by the month. Life imitates art, imitates life.
Politics aside, the quote also directly relates to the idea and purpose I held when I started my studio and spent time coaxing my eventual business partner, Angela, to join me soon after. The quote above could almost have come directly from our conversations then. I feel direct and powerful parallels between the Firefly story and my work life. You may think it silly, but to me it’s enormously meaningful.
I hope you like the poster. I had the windows show a warm glow because that’s what I always imagine coming from inside…warmth and optimism from “…them as feel the need to be free”.
I don’t know yet if I’ll offer prints for sale. There would likely be a royalty to pay to the IP holder and I’m not sure I want to wade into those waters. Would you be interested in purchase if I did?
